(1a) The Hebrews, who were the descendants of Jacob, came to Egypt during the time of Joseph. Joseph had become a powerful ruler in Egypt and helped the country survive a severe famine. Because of Joseph’s influence, his family was welcomed and settled in the fertile land of Goshen. Over time, the Hebrews multiplied greatly and became a large and prosperous people.

After the death of Joseph and his generation, a new Pharaoh arose in Egypt who did not know Joseph or remember the good he had done for the nation. When Pharaoh noticed the rapid increase in the population of the Hebrews, he became afraid. He feared that they might become more numerous and powerful than the Egyptians. He also thought that if war should occur, the Hebrews might join Egypt’s enemies and fight against the nation.

To prevent this, Pharaoh decided to oppress the Hebrews. He appointed taskmasters over them and subjected them to hard labour. The Hebrews were forced to build the store cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh. They worked under very harsh conditions, making bricks and carrying out other difficult construction tasks. Their lives became bitter because of the heavy burdens placed upon them. However, the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread throughout the land.

Pharaoh’s fear increased when he realized that forced labour had failed to reduce their population. He therefore ordered the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill every male Hebrew child at birth while allowing the female children to live. The midwives, however, feared God and refused to obey the king’s command. They preserved the lives of the Hebrew boys and explained to Pharaoh that the Hebrew women gave birth before they arrived.

When this plan failed, Pharaoh issued a more severe decree. He commanded all the Egyptians to throw every newly born Hebrew boy into the River Nile while allowing the girls to live. This cruel order brought fear, sorrow, and suffering upon the Hebrew people. Parents lived in constant anxiety as they tried to protect their sons from being killed.

It was during this period of slavery, oppression, and persecution that Moses was born. The Hebrews cried unto God because of their suffering, and God heard their prayers. He prepared Moses to become the leader who would eventually deliver the Israelites from bondage in Egypt.

Gehazi was the servant of Elisha the prophet. One day, Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army, came to Elisha seeking healing from leprosy. Elisha instructed him to wash seven times in the Jordan River, and he was completely healed. Out of gratitude, Naaman offered Elisha gifts of silver, gold and expensive clothes, but Elisha refused to accept any reward because he wanted Naaman to know that God’s blessings could not be bought.

After Naaman had departed, Gehazi became greedy and desired the gifts that Elisha had rejected. Without Elisha’s knowledge, he ran after Naaman and lied to him, saying that Elisha had sent him to request a talent of silver and two changes of clothes for two young prophets who had just arrived. Believing Gehazi’s story, Naaman gladly gave him two talents of silver and two changes of garments.

Gehazi collected the gifts and hid them in his house before returning to Elisha. When Elisha asked him where he had been, Gehazi lied and claimed that he had gone nowhere. However, Elisha, through the Spirit of God, knew everything that had happened. He rebuked Gehazi for his greed, dishonesty and misuse of his prophetic position for personal gain.

As punishment, Elisha declared that the leprosy of Naaman would cling to Gehazi and his descendants forever. Immediately, Gehazi became leprous, his skin turning white as snow. Because of his greed, deception and disobedience, Gehazi lost his position and was dismissed from the service of Elisha.

John the Baptist was preaching in the wilderness of Judea and baptizing people in the River Jordan for repentance and forgiveness of sins. Many people came to him to confess their sins and be baptized.

Jesus came from Galilee to the River Jordan to be baptized by John. When John saw Him, he tried to prevent Him, saying that he needed to be baptized by Jesus instead. But Jesus answered him, saying it was necessary to fulfil all righteousness.

John then allowed Him and baptized Jesus in the River Jordan. Immediately Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens opened, and the Spirit of God descended like a dove and rested on Him. Then a voice came from heaven saying:

(I) The plot against Jesus by the Jewish leaders:- The chief priests, scribes and elders planned to arrest Jesus secretly because His teachings challenged their authority.

(ii) The betrayal by Judas Iscariot:- Judas agreed with the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them for thirty pieces of silver.

(iii) The arrest of Jesus in Gethsemane:- Jesus was arrested at the Garden of Gethsemane after Judas identified Him with a kiss.

(iv) Trial before the Sanhedrin:- Jesus was taken before the Jewish council where false witnesses accused Him. He was charged with blasphemy because He acknowledged Himself as the Son of God.

(v) Jesus before Pontius Pilate:- Since the Jewish leaders could not sentence Him to death under Roman rule, they handed Him over to Pilate and accused Him of claiming to be king and opposing Caesar.

(vi) Demand of the crowd for crucifixion:- Pilate wished to release Jesus, but the crowd, encouraged by the chief priests, shouted that Jesus should be crucified while Barabbas should be released.

(vii) Pilate’s final judgment:- Pilate washed his hands before the crowd and handed Jesus over to be crucified, leading to His condemnation to death.

“And great fear came upon the whole church, and upon all who heard of these things.” Recount the events that led to the above experience.

This statement refers to the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1–11.

In the early church, believers were united and shared their possessions. Some sold their lands and brought the proceeds to the apostles for distribution to those in need.

Ananias and his wife Sapphira also sold a piece of land. They agreed together to keep back part of the money for themselves, but pretended to bring the full amount to the apostles.

When Ananias brought the money, Peter, through the Holy Spirit, knew what he had done. Peter accused him of lying to the Holy Spirit and keeping back part of the proceeds dishonestly while pretending to give all. Immediately Ananias fell down and died. Young men carried out his body and buried him.

About three hours later, Sapphira came in without knowing what had happened to her husband. Peter asked her whether the amount brought was the full price of the land, and she confirmed the lie. Peter rebuked her for agreeing with her husband to test the Spirit of the Lord. Instantly she also fell down and died. The young men carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

As a result, great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard these events.

James advised all Assembly of God church Christians to do away with any acts of partiality in the church. He said that partiality can manifest when well-dressed and poorly-dressed individuals go to church and the poorly-dressed person is asked to stand up for the well-dressed person. According to James, this is partiality. God often honours those who are despised on earth but are highly faithful in spiritual affairs because it is the earthly rich who are the oppressors of the faithful poor they drag them to court without cause. Peter began with a general admonition to Christians to be subject, for the Lord’s sake, to every human institution, whether it is to the emperor as the supreme authority on earth, or to the government appointed by him to oversee the administration with delegated powers to punish offenders or reward those who do right, for this is the will of God, the ultimate power behind these earthly authorities. He said that by doing the right thing, they would put to shame the ignorance of foolish men. He admonished them to live as men free from the curse of the law and not to misuse their liberty as a pretext for evil. He said they should rather live as servants of God with the fear of God. They should honour all men, love the Christians brotherhood and honour the emperor.
