Remain indoors – FG tells Nigerian students trapped in Sudan

The federal government has directed Nigerian students trapped in war-torn Sudan to remain indoors while arrangements are still ongoing for their safe evacuation from the East African country.

This was conveyed through a statement released on Sunday, April 23, by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Khartoum and signed by H.Y Garko for Charge D’ Affair. The statement noted that it is dangerous to embark on a journey toward the borders of Sudan without security clearance and guarantee from the Sudanese authorities which they’re yet to secure.

The government further advised the students to disregard the notice circulated by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Sudan, which called on students to converge at the African International University, NANSS office, and El-Razi University, for evacuation or to bring $100 or $200 for evacuation.

In another development, the government has reacted to claims that some Nigerian students fleeing the crisis in Sudan are being denied entry into Ethiopia. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, says the Federal government is investigating the claims and will address them accordingly.

In a video that went viral, a young man claimed that as the crisis in Sudan continues, many Africans trapped in the country have fled to the Ethiopian border in their bid to cross over to safety. The young man claimed that all other Africans were being allowed to cross into Ethiopia except Nigerians.
