The term “JAMB Result Upgrade” always tend to trend anytime the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) releases the Unified Tertiary Examination (UTME) results yearly, most especially on social medial platforms. In this article, we are going to know what JAMB result upgrade means, why do candidates seek it, how it is done, and lastly, if it’s worth it.
What is JAMB Result Upgrade?
JAMB Result Upgrade literally means the upgrade or increment of a candidates UTME score to a higher score.
Life itself has proven that we are not all winners, in every race; there are always winners and losers. This rule or principle is applicable in almost all aspects of this life including the JAMB Exam: UTME. In as much as I hate the term “losers”. If you are not a winner, then clearly you’re the opposite. Every year after the UTME Exam, a lot of UTME candidates either scores above or below their required cut-off points.
Why Do Candidates Seek for Upgrade?
One of the reasons why candidates usually seek to upgrade their UTME score is because of the “cut-off mark” set by every tertiary institution in Nigeria. These cut-off marks set by institutions are meant to limit the number of applicants yearly and also a way of assessing the applicants of the institution. Every tertiary institution has a level of knowledge it expects every applicant of the institution should have attain from their previous education. This is what makes each institution to set a cut-off mark every applicant must score exactly or above the point to be qualified for admission.
In Nigeria, public institutions tends to have the highest number of applicants yearly because they are affordable and they are up to standard (in the “Nigerian” sense though).
Every year, you’ll see institutions like the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Bayero University, Kano (BUK), University of Ibadan (UI), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and their likes having a number of 50,000-100,000+ applicants. Same applies to polytechnics and colleges in a smaller scale though. Sadly, all the institutions usually have less than 10,000 admission slot for candidates forcing them to increase the criteria for their admission; cut-off mark inclusive.
Let’s take Bayero University Kano (BUK) for instance, the official cut-off mark for medicine is 220, but in most situation, you’ll see over 200+ applicants fighting for that course, with over 60% plus scoring above the required cut-off mark, the university on the other hand, only has a slot for 100 candidates. The institution will now be forced to increase its cut-off mark to limit some of the candidates.
All these are just to make you see and understand that it’s not only candidates who did not score above the required cut-off mark that might seek an upgrade, but also candidates who did not score so much above the required cut-off mark would seek an upgrade to stand a better chance should incase a situation like this plays out.
This tends to create an environment for people who claim to upgrade JAMB results. But can it be true?
Is JAMB Result Upgrade Real?
For every legit business or organization, in as much as you don’t have a recognized office where everyone or at least a reasonable number of people leaving within or outside that locality knows what you produce or what services you render is a fraud. Yes, I said it. People who claim to do JAMB upgrade can only be seen on social media platforms with suspicious account profiles.
Have you ever asked yourself why you’ve never seen any Approved JAMB CBT Centres or even a Cyber Café that render JAMB services such as result printing, checking of admission status etc, advertise JAMB Result Upgrade? I believe that 99% of people reading this article right now have not. But should in case you’re among the rare 1% that have seen such, be rest assured that it’s a fraud, and that centre will soon be penalized from participating in UTME exercises in the nearest future.
How does it Work?
From my research, all those people who claim to do JAMB Upgrade operate in three phases.
First of all, there are the ones who just use photo editing softwares like Corel Draw, Photoshop and the likes to edit the result i.e. after checking it online. They’ll save the result take it to one of the above-mentioned editing software environment and edit it to their taste and voila you have a new result. But I’m sorry to disappoint you that this does not reflect on JAMB’s website. If you try to re-check your result online, you’ll still see the same score as you saw from the very beginning.
The second phase are the hackers, cybercriminals who tend to attack the servers of JAMB to effect those changes. You should equally bear it in mind that the board has cybersecurity experts and professionals in that field that protect those servers from such hackers and cybercriminals.
The third phase is very rare, this is where you’ll find fraudulent JAMB personnel or people who claim to be, that get paid to effect those changes. But, JAMB over the years has proven to be good in audits, running check and balances of their systems from time to time.
Is it Worth it?
When you get caught participating in any of the phases of JAMB Result Upgrade as mentioned above be rest assured that not only the person you pay to effect the upgrade will be punished, you’ll also get your fair share.
Below are some cases where people involved with UTME Upgrade gets punished:
- 2019 UTME Candidate Arrested for Paying N10,000 to Upgrade UTME Score
- 19-Year-Old Arrested for Upgrading 2019 UTME Score – JAMB
- Four UTME Candidates’ Results Revoked By JAMB Over Forgery
and so much more…
If by chance, you’ve already gotten admission with the Upgraded Result before it was discovered by JAMB or the institution you entered with the Upgraded result be rest assured that that will be the end of your programme, all the money and time you’ve wasted will be for nothing, JAMB will also make sure you face the full wrath of the law.
With all these been said, it is not worth it not even for a single bit. It’s better to wait for another year to re-write the UTME and hope for a better score than to be a part of the JAMB Result Upgrade scam because that is what it is. It’s a scam!
A word they say its enough for the wise!
