Federal Government seeks to abolish the 6-3-3-4 education system

The Federal Government has is seeking to abolish the 6-3-3-4 education system and replacing it with 12-4. Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, revealed this on Thursday in Abuja during the 2025 extraordinary National Council on Education meeting.

According to the Minister, merging the secondary education into basic education will help students benefit from uninterrupted learning up to the age of 16.

The minister said a 12-year basic education system is in line with global best practices.will reduce dropout rates by removing financial and systemic barriers.

He also said it would standardise the curriculum and offer early vocational training to prepare students for higher education and employment.
